About
T-90 Main Battle Tank is a Russian third-generation Main Battle Tank that was developed in the early 90's. T-90's construction embodies the best design solutions, the best layout and structural features of the T-72B and T-80U Main Battle Tank. It receives a reliable and durable chassis from T-72B and a turret equipped with advanced armament and fire control system from T-80U. T-90 armor consists of steel-composite-reactive blend and a built in explosive reactive armor (ERA), KONTAKT-5. Additional defense system also include the TShu-2 "SHTORA" opto-electronic countermeasure system which defends the tank from anti-tank guided missile (ATGM). The main gun, the 2A46M 125mm smoothbore gun is fitted with two-plane stabilizer and it could fire both conventional rounds and anti-tank guided missiles. It is also worth mentioning that, during the Chechen invasion of Dagestan in 1999, one T-90 was hit by seven RPG anti-tank rockets but still remained in action. This proves that the T-90 had an excellent protection characteristics.
